Herbal Remedies for Fleas
What's bugging you is one question that man's best friend cannot answer- mostly because if he is beset by this problem, he is probably scratching himself to get rid of the resident pest. A single flea can bite a dog more than 400 times and consume more than its body weight of the dog's blood. The horrifying statistics do not end there because if the flea in question is female, it can lay hundreds of eggs on your pet; so bite by bite, your four-legged friend is assured of itching for days on end.
Not a happy thought for pet lovers or the pets in question, understandably so, since fleas are a very common problem that is everywhere, even in cities.
However, there are many natural herbal remedies for fleas that deal effectively and safely with this itchy issue in quick-time march.
Combat tactics for dealing with bloodsuckers: herbal remedies to make the fleas flee
The remedies listed below are natural cures for repelling fleas, ticks and flies and need to be applied frequently for the most effective results:
- Herbal insect repellent mix: Dried peppermint, eucalyptus, bay leaf herbs, marjoram, eucalyptus, rosemary, sage and clove buds need to be crushed well and filled into a muslin bag. This should be placed in the dog's bedding or near the sleeping area for maximum effectiveness.
- Flea Spritzer blend: this is a spray-on option for dealing with fleas and one needs 2 drops of cedar wood, lemongrass, rose geranium each, mixed with 1 tea spoon apple cider vinegar and 1 tea spoon vodka, along with 1 cup of dried peppermint, eucalyptus and bay leaf herbs. Keep handy 1- 2 cups of water. To prepare this flea Spritzer blend, add the essential oils and vodka in a bottle, tighten the lid and shake well to blend it nicely- the mix turning white is your signal to finally add the apple cider vinegar. Boil water and remove from heat. Add dried herbs in the water and let it simmer for 30 minutes; let cool, drain and use instead of plain water in your spritzer. Spray gently onto the dog's coat, legs, tummy and back areas or rub it well to apply it when necessary, taking care to avoid spraying/applying essential oils on your dog's face or around nose, ears and eyes.
- Olive oil, Peppermint and Lavender are believed to be excellent flea relief givers too and a little olive oil in a spray bottle with a couple of drops of either essential oil can be used to spritz a fine mist over the affected area of your pet.
- Necklaces made of balls of eucalyptus leaves is another effective home remedy that herbalists recommend for putting near the beds of pets infected with fleas.
